Teenagers Rock!

It's lucky #13 for Clint this year!!  Our kids are all teenagers now, and we think it's great!  Clint had a friend party last Friday night and then we celebrated with Grandma and Grandpa last night, out to dinner, presents and cake.  This morning the birthday boy got to eat cheesecake for his breakfast!!  See, lucky!  Today we're going to a movie, out for ice cream, and grilling Clint's favorite Carne Asada!

Besides a couple of books, movies and Legos, Clint also got some GUNS!

Grandpa and Grandma gave him a squirt gun, just in time for Bear Lake!  And as per Thompson tradition when a boy reaches 1st class Scout rank, he gets a 22.  This one was his Grandpa Kent's so it has extra meaning.

In honor of Clint, here are 13 words that describe him:
1. Gregarious
2. Mechanically-inclined
3. Maniacal

4. Bodacious
5. Inventive
6. Mischievous
7. Coordinated

8. Sneaky
9. Happy
10. Funny
11. Sarcastic
12. Helpful
13. Awesome!
I was also going to add Brainiac, Thoughtful, and Cute, but I let Clint pick the top 13!!  Happy Birthday, Clint!

Cider O'Malley, Detective Dog, And The Case Of The Phantom Mouse

Summary of surveillance:
Operative:  Cider O'Malley, Detective Dog, hereby referred to as The Operative
Scene:  backyard of the Operative's residence
Method of surveillance:  a strong sense of smell
Person of Interest: a small, furry rodent, hereby known as The Subject

After sniffing out the Subject, a small, furry rodent allegedly taking up residence in a backyard window well, the Operative observed the following:

1. The Subject had tunneled its way into the window well from the lawn.

2. The Subject was residing in a plastic watering can that had inadvertently fallen into said window well.

3. A scan of the Subject's activities revealed scratching, eating, tunneling, and generally being a nuisance.

An attempt by the Operative to gain access to the window well proved difficult, she would need assistance.

Allies:  Michelle and Kori assisted by pointing out the Subject, discussing possible trapping scenarios, and kind of acting scared.

Kevin the cat:  Although able to easily gain access to the Subject, Kevin's general apathy and laziness got the better of him.  Besides, he needed a nap.

Wes, hereby known as Master:  proved to be the most valuable ally by removing the watering can with his bare hands, with the Subject still inside!  Such skill, the Operative was impressed.

When the subject exited its former residence, the Operative immediately went into battle mode, charging the Subject, chasing and biting it.  The Operative was slightly deterred when the Subject stood on its hind legs, hissed, and bit the Operative in her most valuable asset, her nose.  Master once again proved valuable as he entered the fray with shovel in hand.  Was it the end of the rodent?

Surveillance continues:
Scene:  the backyard
Time: 0300 hours, that's AM!

The Operative began a series of recon operations during which she pursued rodents, at least the ones in her mind.  A scan of the Operative's activities revealed sniffing, scratching, rummaging, and generally being a nuisance.  Master came to her assistance, but the mission was compromised when the Operative found herself alone, in the dark, and unable to proceed.

Translation:  she was locked in the garage.

Approximately 1630 hours the next afternoon, while keeping a low profile in the backyard, the Operative spied the plastic watering can.  Did she smell something suspicious?  Did she detect movement?

The Operative moved into position and threw all of her efforts into an attack of the watering can, biting, chasing, growling, and trying to take it down with a rollover.

The Operative carried the watering  can around the perimeter in search of a possible band of rodent insurgents.  None were detected.  Still... that smell... must research further.

Respectfully submitted,

Cider O'Malley, Detective Dog

Nightstand Project

I'm in the middle of a few projects around my house, and this is the first one completed.  I can't believe I am actually getting stuff like this done in the summertime, but yay!  This is an old nightstand that Wes actually made in shop class back in the day.  Over the years it has been carved in, drawn on, and basically abused.  It needed a new life.  This is a "before" shot after it had been sanded down a little bit:

And here's the finished product, after some primer, paint, lots of distressing and a coat of glaze.  I think it's quite cute.  We are re-doing Kori's room right now, and she'll get the nightstand.

Bunco!

Bunco is a highlight of every month for me, and this time it was at my house!  The weather was perfect, and it was so nice to just sit in the backyard and enjoy summery food, great company, shouts of "Bunco" plus PRIZES!

I love my Bunco ladies!!  I can't believe we've been doing this for almost 10 years!

Alaina, who sadly could not come, provided our awesome prizes!  Here's Tammy, the Bunco queen!

Heidi and I won bags that totally matched what we were wearing!
Kori got to sub, and she's excited about both of the bags we won!
I did kind of a watermelon theme, everything was pink and green.  We munched on stromboli, spinach salad, chips, and a watermelon bowl full of fruit.  We also had a sherbet dessert that I made to look like watermelon.  Thanks a "melon" everyone, it was a super fun Bunco night!
