We Went To The Dark Side

Total solar eclipse 2017! What an amazing, indescribable experience. We were in the path of totality on Fremont Lake in Wyoming. We had gorgeous views, a little cove pretty much all to ourselves, and we were basically blown away by the event.

We had heard how crazy it was going to get up north, but this was how our roads looked through Wyoming most of the time. Crickets.

The night before, we stayed at cute little Boulder Lake Lodge. It wasn't right on the lake, but the views were still pretty and the food was yummy.

The next morning we got right to it, we hit the lake about two and a half hours before totality, enough time to cruise around, talk to a few other boaters and see the beauty of this place.

...and take a few silly shots! Ha ha!! What a feeling!

Wes did a little fishing, and we moved around the lake until we found this nice little cove where we stayed to finish the total eclipse.

When the eclipse started, it was a little freaky to see that crescent shape move across the sun. Then as it got closer to totality, everything got darker, kind of twilighty or like we were seeing everything through a filter. The temperature dropped, and it became really quiet and still. Almost eerie.

Then, just as the moon completely covered the sun, it got significantly darker and a shout went up from the lake around us. It was really fun to experience it on the water with a bunch of other boaters! At that moment, we could take off our eclipse glasses and marvel at the sight. It was utterly astounding. Like nothing I could even describe. An otherworldly experience, something one definitely needs to experience for oneself. And it all seemed so close, like the sun was just right there at the lake with us! With the moon completely covering it, and the corona shining out from around the moon. Wow! Of course, we couldn't really take a picture of a total solar eclipse with our iphones, but we tried anyway. I was taking some silly selfies, but actually ended up with a genuine reaction. You can also see in these pictures how much darker it got just as it reached totality.

Then, just like that, it was over. It got light again pretty quickly. We stayed on the lake and watched until the moon passed completely over the sun. Wes went for a swim, fished a little more, we ate some lunch, and then we packed up and left the lake.

We had a really nice, relaxing drive home. We drove up to the Wyoming ranch where Wes worked for a summer during high school. We poked around Pinedale a little bit. We had an amazing trip! Definitely a do-over day, one of the coolest experiences ever! Well worth the visit for seeing the eclipse in totality! Totally spectacular!!
